The days of students being told to ‘pull themselves together’ when committing self-harm or displaying symptoms of an eating disorder are thankfully long gone. Today we realise that sufferers need empathy, respect and understanding if they are to tackle the psychological issues that underlie their conditions. The recovery process is often long and difficult, and invariably relies on strong support from the school.
