Delegates will explore key issues in supporting students with English as an additional language and receive a range of strategies, support resources and links to enable schools to maximise the positive benefits of bilingualism for all children within the changing demographics of schools.

  • Implement effective induction procedures for new arrivals including in EYFS
  • Review effective strategies for supporting beginner learners of English informed by outstanding primary EAL practice case studies
  • Identify and address vocabulary issues impacting on pupil progress in subject lessons
  • Examine key principles for assessing EAL students
  • Identify gaps in writing and develop plans to address these
  • Recognise the positive benefits of bilingualism for primary classrooms

  • Outstanding Primary EAL case studies – what are the key strategies employed by outstanding schools?
Planning
  • Vocabulary focus (maths) – what are the issues for EAL pupils with technical language and how can we mitigate for these?
  • Planning schemes of work – how can we build a focus on key language structures into our planning?
  • Using Cummins’ ‘Four Dimensions Quadrant’ – how can we plan appropriate challenge while supporting EAL learners?
Assessing
  • Assessing EAL pupils – how can we accurately assess EAL pupils?
  • Analysing writing and adapting planning to address gaps
  • Reviewing key principles for supporting EAL pupils
