This course will give an overview of the behaviour management issues specific to working with students who have severe learning difficulties (SLD) and profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). There will be consideration of what we mean by ‘behavioural difficulties' and practical teaching and learning strategies to support the effective management of disabilities.

  • Whole-school behaviour policy – developing/reviewing the school behaviour policy, related policies (e.g. physical interventions) and roles and responsibilities
  • Behaviour – what does this mean and how do we manage this? Includes teaching and learning strategies, risk assessment, and behaviours associated with specific conditions
  • Individual students documentation – including statements and IEPs, recording and reporting behaviour, and developing effective behaviour-management plans
