In 2018, the University of Roehampton warned that a digital skills gap is emerging between students successfully completing GCSE computing and their peers. The typical computing student is likely to be male, comes from a relatively affluent background, studies triple science and is mathematically able. There is evidence that this growing digital divide is disproportionately impacting girls, disadvantaged students and some ethnic minority groups. This course seeks to equip participants with the knowledge to enthuse, engage and encourage all KS3 students to feel able to pursue the subject at KS4 and to create financially viable groups at KS4.

  • Engage with research that outlines reasons for the digital skills gap
  • Connect with role models currently working in the sector
  • Increase knowledge about jobs in the sector and challenge stereotypes
  • Incorporate effective pedagogies and technologies to engage all students
  • Actively recruit underrepresented groups using effective social group and peer recruitment techniques
  • Encourage students to become real world problem solvers through ‘low floor, high ceiling’ tasks
