Supporting your child with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)
Included with parent membership
From £4 a month
Too much kindness can hold a disabled child back, so learn how to give the support they need and still expect their best.
Free for 14 days, then £4 a month or £40 a year. Cancel before day 14 and you won't pay anything.
It's natural to want to make life easier for a disabled child. The homework slides after a week in hospital, the rules bend, someone else does the hard bit. But a child who's always let off learns that less is expected of them, and they're the one who pays for it later.
Your guide is a disability campaigner who grew up with a facial disfigurement and partial sight and hearing, and who admits he got away with far too much at school. He's frank and funny about it. Disability isn't inability, he says, and what he wanted was "a hand up, not a handout". So get to know the child as a person, agree the adjustments that level the field (a seat at the front, bigger print) and then hold everyone to them, the child included.
You'll come away clearer about when to step in and when to push.
