    Having Fun – The Sensory Way: Five Ideas to Have Fun at a Party!

    I would like to share with you some practical ideas for encouraging meaningful engagement with people with PMLD. These activities will enhance communication, interaction, curiosity, initiation and good mental wellbeing through having fun with our senses! Through the joint participation of party activities, it is possible to create a sense of awe and wonder, anticipation, excitement and reflection. This course would be suitable for anyone who spends time with people with PMLD and who is looking for some simple yet fun activities to initiate and enhance communication.

    Creating Effective EHCP’s that Work for Learners with PMLD

    Training for all levels of professionals, including those new to education and parents and carers. The course will provide an overview of the EHCP process, from requesting one, to creation and through to challenging decisions. The impact on the education of learners with PMLD of EHCP process, and how we can get this right will be explored and practical strategies provided. The key role of effective multi professional collaboration, alongside a holistic approach will be highlighted. Strategies to ensure effective integration of advice into the EHCP process from day one will be explored

    The Profound Impact of Grief – An Introduction to Grief and Children with PMLD

    Grief is inclusive - but is grief support inclusive? Are the emotional needs of all children being met? All humans experience grief, regardless of their age or abilities. Sadly, the needs of bereaved and grieving children with SEND are often overlooked and when children have limited verbal communication skills this tends to result in their grief being totally neglected. This course looks at: what grief is (it’s about much more than death), how to identify grief in children with PMLD, how these children express their grief and crucially how we can support bereaved and grieving children with PMLD.

    Medical Conditions Training: Epilepsy

    In this course we cover all aspects of Epilepsy – we look at what it is, the most common symptoms you might see and discuss some of the most common types of seizures, including seizures that are not caused by Epilepsy. The different triggers and treatment options are considered as well as Emergency Medication administration (Buccal Midazolam). We use the mnemonic A.C.T.I.O.N to give some advice about what to do when someone is having an Epileptic Seizure. Finally we discuss some of the rare complications linked to Epilepsy and think about the impact of Epilepsy on a child.

    Topic Teaching for Students with PMLD

    People with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) access the world around them in variety of different ways, it is our responsibility to present information and experiences in a way that will enable them to explore their own values, independence and become active participators in society. We can support this through offering experiences that are presented in a meaningful way for the individual and using a range of strategies, techniques and creativity. There is not just one fix but many facets and multiple elements that help enhance this drive to explore, understand and participate. Through this course, Sonya will offer practical advice tips and ideas on planning and delivering engaging, fun and exciting theme or topic-based activities to people with PMLD.

    Memories – Ideas and Resources to Support Bereavement and Grief for Pupils with PMLD

    The course focusses on ideas around bereavement but the ideas and resources can be adapted to aid any transitions eg starting or leaving school, new home. Our pupils need sensory resources because that is how they access information from the world around them. However, as we all do, they need to honour memories of people who have died. We need to find ways to communicate and express ourselves without words or with concrete resources to support the spoken word.

    An Introduction to PDA or Demand Avoidance. A Parent and Carers’ Guide

    In this course you will learn about the characteristics of PDA, a profile of the autism spectrum. x Children who present as demand avoidant will also have high levels of anxiety, making everyday tasks seem overwhelming to them and result in refusing, withdrawing or shutting down to avoid doing things. This can be very challenging as a parent and is often be overlooked or misinterpreted. We will look at all the ways that a child may present with PDA and how to spot the triggers alongside strategies to help support these children. While autism approaches may be helpful for addressing sensory issues we will also look at the flexible and collaborative approaches that are needed for the child who is demand avoidant. This course will help you to learn new creative strategies and knowledge to support the child at home and how to understand our children and support them in a way that works for them.

While autism approaches may be helpful for addressing sensory issues we will also look at the flexible and collaborative approaches that are needed for the child who is demand avoidant.  This course will help you to learn new creative strategies and knowledge to support the child in school as well as enabling the child to feel understood and supported through their time in education. This course is for anyone who would like to gain greater knowledge of PDA and be better equipped to support the child in feeling able to engage with their environment and learning.
