Module 6 of 7
In Progress

How to ensure equal access to an ambitious curriculum

Building on the previous module about ensuring the curriculum is challenging for all, Matt says that differentiation can be dangerous if it takes the guise of dumbing down for ‘less able’ pupils.  He argues that no one is average and definitions of ‘less’ and ‘more able’ are therefore problematic.  He also says that ‘teaching to the top’ is the only defensible strategy and that work should be pitched in pupils’ ‘struggle zones’ so that it is hard but achievable.

Matt then explores some of the hallmarks of a classroom environment that is conducive to challenge and that will help pupils to accept hard work.
