    Self-Esteem: Helping Teens Find Purpose & Belonging

    During this practical short course, Pooky will walk you through a range of simple ideas to help you boost the self-esteem of the young people in your care.  None of these ideas require any existing knowledge or experience and are designed to feel easily doable.  You don’t have to do them all, pick one or two and see how you get on. This course is written with parents and carers primarily in mind, but the ideas here could easily be adapted for use by people working with young people or you could use them to deliver workshops or discussion sessions to parents or carers. This is one of a series of webinars commissioned by Resilient Rutland who are funded by the National Lottery.

    Memories – Ideas and Resources to Support Bereavement and Grief for Pupils with PMLD

    The course focusses on ideas around bereavement but the ideas and resources can be adapted to aid any transitions eg starting or leaving school, new home. Our pupils need sensory resources because that is how they access information from the world around them. However, as we all do, they need to honour memories of people who have died. We need to find ways to communicate and express ourselves without words or with concrete resources to support the spoken word.

    In this course, Matt Bromley shares practical ways for teachers to manage their workload in order to promote good health and wellbeing.  One in 10 teachers left the profession in 2016.  Of these, an increasing proportion left the profession for other jobs rather than retiring, suggesting working conditions not age was driving them out of the classroom.  Although there are myriad reasons why teachers quit the profession, topping the table in nearly every survey is teacher workload. So, how can teachers manage their time more effectively and ensure they strike a healthy work life balance, in order to protect their health and wellbeing?  This online course offers some tangible tips teachers can put into immediate practice.  As well as being useful for individual CPD, this course could form the basis of in-school 1-2-1 coaching for prospective members of SLT.

    An Introduction to Managing Behaviour

    This pathway is split into three sections.  

    1. Routines, rewards and sanctions: Matt offers practical, sensible advice on how to manage student behaviour in the classroom. He shares seven easy-to-implement strategies and emphasises the importance of establishing good routines to limit the amount of time spent off-task.
    2. Motivation and engagement: Matt talks about the importance of motivation and engagement as a means of preventing poor behaviour. 
    3. Principles and presence: Matt shares ten top tips for managing behaviour, shares three principles to guide your behaviour management approaches, and articulates the importance of developing a presence in the classroom to exude authority and control. 

    As well as being useful for individual CPD for teachers, this course could form the basis of whole-school training or one to one coaching. The ideas could be adapted and used across phases and is suitable for a wide range of staff including newer staff and support staff.

    Reducing Exclusions Through a Trauma Informed Approach

    A trauma informed response is one where we create an environment where children who’ve experienced trauma or adversity feel safe, can emotionally regulate and are more able to engage with life and learning.  This approach can reduce exclusions and increase engagement with learning both within and beyond the classrooms as children are supported to move beyond a fear response into a calmer state where learning becomes a possibility and anger and anxiety responses become better regulated.
