About this course

A 17-year-old goes on a family holiday in the middle of her A-levels and doesn't come back in September. The school asks, is told she doesn't want to return, and leaves it there. She has been married against her will, and spends four years trapped abroad. Years later she asked her old headteacher why nobody did anything.

Next time, you'll know what to do. Forced marriage involves coercion and is a crime, which is what separates it from an arranged marriage. It affects boys and young men as well as girls, and young people with learning disabilities who can't consent. You'll learn the warning signs, the times of year when risk is highest, and how a forced marriage protection order can stop someone being taken abroad. It also covers dishonour abuse and virginity testing.

It's taught by the founder of a charity that supports survivors of forced marriage.
