Mental health and wellbeing training for schools

Short online courses on pupils’ and staff mental health: anxiety, self-harm, low mood, eating difficulties and your own wellbeing. For every adult in school.

255 courses, every one included with membership.

Where to start

Each course ends in a certificate showing the CPD hours, the date and when it’s due for renewal.

Every adult can help

Children who are struggling usually tell an adult they already know, often a teaching assistant or a form tutor, long before they see a counsellor. So those adults need to know what anxiety or self-harm looks like, what to say and when to pass it on. That’s what most of these courses are for. They’re short and practical, and they don’t assume you’ve studied psychology.

The Spot and Support series takes one difficulty at a time (anxiety, low mood, self-harm, eating disorders, OCD, PTSD and more) and covers the signs, the first conversation and who to tell. Other courses cover grief and bereavement, emotionally based school avoidance, and children with SEND, looked-after children and LGBTQ+ young people, whose needs often get missed.

Looking after the staff too

You can’t pour from an empty cup. Anyone who’s sat through a wellbeing INSET has heard it, and it’s still true. There are courses for staff on their own wellbeing, sleep, workload and imposter syndrome. For leaders, there are courses on building a culture where people ask for help well before they’re on their knees.

For senior mental health leads

If you lead mental health in your school or college, there’s training for the role itself, from getting started to auditing your provision and building a whole-school approach. Our Senior Mental Health Lead course goes further, and you get six months to work through it at your own pace.

Who you’ll learn from

Dr Pooky Knightsmith presents several of our mental health courses. She specialises in children’s and young people’s mental health, and the courses are honest about what a school can and can’t do on its own.

Questions about mental health and wellbeing training

Do staff need mental health training?

It isn’t a legal requirement for every member of staff, but the Department for Education expects schools to take a whole-school approach to mental health, and that relies on staff spotting problems early. Short training for everyone is the simplest way to start.

Is this training for teachers or for support staff?

Both. The Spot and Support courses are written for any adult in school. Some courses are for leaders and mental health leads.

How long do the courses take?

Most take under an hour, so they fit into a twilight or a staff meeting.

Do you offer Senior Mental Health Lead training?

Yes. Our Senior Mental Health Lead training is a five-part online course with six months to finish, and there’s an annual refresher for leads already in post.
