A pupil who's pale, shaky, snappy and can't concentrate might be tired or fed up. If they have type 1 diabetes, they might be having a hypo, and that calls for a sugary drink, not a sanction.
A little diabetes awareness helps you tell the difference. You'll get type 1 and type 2 explained in plain terms, with the "too much sugar" myth put to bed. Then you'll see what managing the condition looks like across a school day: finger-prick tests, glucose monitors that alert a phone, insulin pens and pumps. You'll see why a phone on the desk can be a medical necessity.
Above all, you'll know how to respond. Fast-acting glucose first, check again after about 15 minutes, and never send the pupil to the medical room on their own. If they don't improve, or show signs of DKA, call 999.
