When and How to Make Targeted and Specialist Referrals: A Guide for School Staff and Parents
Included with membership
After you refer a child to CAMHS, families still look to you, so know what happens next and how to plan their return to school.
Free for 14 days, then £7 a month or £70 a year. Cancel before day 14 and you won't pay anything.
Once a referral goes in, your part isn't over. Families will turn to you with questions, parents may not share your level of concern, and a young person can be at their most vulnerable just when everyone assumes treatment has sorted things out.
Here's what usually happens next, from the first check on urgency to assessment, NICE-recommended treatment such as CBT and family work, and the difference between inpatient and outpatient care. You'll also know what to do if CAMHS doesn't accept a referral, including BEAT's guidance on challenging a decision.
With that in hand, you can plan a careful return to school with the family and the clinical team, and point everyone towards support such as BEAT, Anorexia and Bulimia Care and SEED.
