Having Fun the Sensory Way: Five Ideas to have Fun with Bubbles
I would like to share with you some practical ideas for encouraging meaningful engagement with people with PMLD. These activities will enhance communication, interaction, curiosity, initiation and good mental wellbeing through having fun with our senses! Through the joint exploration of simple, everyday objects, it is possible to create a sense of awe and wonder, anticipation, excitement and reflection.
This course would be suitable for anyone who spends time with people with PMLD and who is looking for some simple yet fun activities to initiate and enhance communication.
I have been an SEN teacher for 20 years and have worked specifically with students with PMLD for the last 14 years. I have assisted with setting up our topic based curriculum with particular focus on making this specific to the individual. We ensure our students receive a healthy balance of activities during the school day and these are based around the four key areas; Communication, Sensory Cognition, Physical and Independence. The topics are delivered throughout a variety of sensory experiences such as Sensory Stories, Art, Cooking, Resonance Board, Story Massage, Technology, Sensology, Music and Movement and our daily ‘Hello!’ session. Alongside these, we ensure our students have their regular physiotherapy by following their individual exercise plans, Cycling, Aqua Therapy and Rebound Therapy. An underlying element that is present in all of our sessions however is about having lots of fun!
