About this course

Maybe a student has stopped turning up on time, or has gone quiet in a group that used to make them laugh. You're worried, but you don't want to say the wrong thing, so it's tempting to wait and see. Waiting can make things worse, though, and students who've struggled often say they didn't have the words, or didn't want to be a burden. The first move usually has to come from you.

A former NHS mental health nurse shows how to start that conversation. Tell the student what you've noticed rather than guessing at the problem, then ask open questions and listen. Keep clear boundaries. Don't promise to keep something secret that you may have to pass on, and don't promise it will all be fine. Offer hope and a clear next step instead.

The same approach works whether you teach 16-year-olds, adult learners or apprentices.
