About this course

Several people who went on to abuse children in schools and nurseries had no convictions and passed every check. A DBS check and references only tell you so much. They can't show you how someone behaves under pressure, or whether their values fit your school's.

Values-based interviewing is designed to find that out. Two trained interviewers ask two or three questions built around your school's values, then use the SAFARI model to probe one example until a rehearsed answer runs out. Setting it up takes values the whole community owns, interviewers with proper training, and candidates who know what to expect.

The approach was developed at the NSPCC and one school has used it for over a decade. When a panel there overruled a poor values interview and appointed anyway, the contract ended within a term.
