From Appointment to Action: Getting Started as a Senior Mental Health Lead

Whether you’re a school leader looking to appoint a Senior Mental Health Lead, an education professional considering qualifying for the role, or a setting that’s recently lost its SMHL and needs to get someone trained up — you’re in the right place.

In this post, we’re breaking down what the Senior Mental Health Lead role actually involves, why it matters, and how the right training can set someone up to lead on mental health with genuine confidence.

What Is a Senior Mental Health Lead?

A Senior Mental Health Lead (SMHL) is a designated member of staff who takes strategic responsibility for mental health and wellbeing across a school or college. The role sits at the intersection of pastoral care, whole-school strategy, and staff development — and it requires someone who can see the bigger picture while also understanding the day-to-day realities of school life.

In practice, this might mean developing a whole-school approach to mental health, identifying and responding to the needs of students and staff, auditing existing provision, and building an actionable improvement plan for your setting.

It’s a role that can have a genuine, lasting impact — and for education professionals looking to develop, it’s one that can significantly strengthen your profile and career prospects.

Why the SMHL Role Is Growing

Mental health in schools has never been more firmly in the spotlight. Leaders, governors, and Ofsted inspectors are paying closer attention to how schools and colleges are supporting the wellbeing of both students and staff — and the Senior Mental Health Lead role is central to that conversation.

For schools and colleges, having a trained, confident SMHL in post isn’t just good practice — it’s increasingly expected. And for education professionals, qualifying as a Senior Mental Health Lead is an increasingly valued step, whether you’re looking to deepen your impact, broaden your responsibilities, or strengthen your prospects for future leadership roles.

Thinking About Qualifying as a Senior Mental Health Lead?

If you’re an education professional considering stepping into the SMHL role, training is the essential first step. Good SMHL training gives you a thorough grounding in your responsibilities, equips you to develop a whole-school approach to mental health, and builds the practical skills to support both student and staff wellbeing from the moment you step into post.

It’s also a genuine career investment. The SMHL specialism demonstrates strategic thinking, a commitment to wellbeing, and the ability to lead meaningful whole-school change — all qualities that carry real weight in education leadership.

Has Your SMHL Left? Here’s How to Get Someone Trained Quickly

Staff turnover is a reality in every school — and when an SMHL moves on, it can leave a real gap. The good news is that getting someone qualified doesn’t have to mean waiting for the next available face-to-face cohort or disrupting timetables with set training days.

Our fully on-demand programme means a new SMHL can begin training immediately, working through the course around their existing commitments — no waiting lists, no fixed dates.

What Does SMHL Training Involve?

At Creative Education, our fully on-demand programme — An Introduction to the Role of the Senior Mental Health Lead: Starting Out with Confidence — is designed to give anyone stepping into the role a strong, confident foundation.

Split across five carefully structured parts, the course covers:

  • Understanding the SMHL role — responsibilities, remit, and how to approach the role with clarity
  • The principles of a whole-school approach — how to embed mental health across your setting rather than treating it as an add-on
  • Supporting student wellbeing — identifying need, building provision, and knowing when and how to act
  • Supporting staff wellbeing — recognising that a mentally healthy school starts with the people who work in it
  • Building your improvement plan — practical tools to audit current provision and lead meaningful, lasting change

Flexible Online SMHL Training That Fits Around School Life

One of the biggest barriers to CPD for school staff is time — and we designed this course with that very much in mind.

The programme is entirely on-demand, with no set dates, no live sessions, and no pressure to keep pace with a cohort. Participants get six months’ access to work through all five parts entirely at their own pace, around their existing commitments.

The course has also been developed to be accessible wherever you are in your career. Whether you’re currently working as supply, based overseas, or looking to qualify before securing a permanent post, you can still complete the programme in full. For those without a current setting, we provide fictional school scenarios so you have everything you need to work through the assessments and gain the qualification — no permanent role required.

How Is the Course Assessed?

The course is fully assessed, giving you a recognised qualification to take forward in your career. Once you’ve worked through the five parts, you’ll submit an action plan and provision map based on your setting — or one of our provided fictional school scenarios if you don’t currently have a permanent post.

Your submission is then reviewed by a qualified assessor, who will give you personalised feedback before your qualification is formally awarded. It’s a meaningful, professionally credible process — not just a tick-box exercise.

What Does the Course Cost?

The programme is priced at £375 +VAT per person.

  • Organisational Members receive a discounted rate of £350 +VAT
  • Add a colleague for £300 +VAT

It’s a meaningful investment in professional development — and in the wellbeing of everyone in your setting.
