About this course

On a school transport route you can't pause the day or send a pupil out of the room. If a child with SEND or SEMH needs becomes overwhelmed, it happens in a small space, with the driver's eyes on the road and a timetable to keep.

Drivers and passenger assistants learn to read what's going on and bring it back down. Behaviour is communication here. The noise, a different driver or a hard morning at home can all sit behind a pupil who kicks off. You'll get to know each child's baseline so you notice the fidgeting or the sudden silence early, keep your voice low and slow, offer small choices instead of threats, and agree a signal so your colleague can take over.

De-escalation doesn't stop at the school gate, so the last part covers a warm goodbye, a factual incident record and looking after yourself.
